Deeper education needed to fully appreciate inauguration speech

Too many students failed to understand the historical and cultural underpinnings of President Barack Obama's inaugural address, writes Robert Pondiscio, a former fifth-grade teacher and the communications director for the Core Knowledge Foundation. Historical events referred to throughout the speech likely mean little to those students for whom history has been a second-class subject, he writes.
