Families pull together to keep businesses operating

Family businesses may have an edge in the recession over other small businesses because of their experience, work ethic and potential for extending financial resources. For example, six 12th- and four 13th-generation members of the Knight family own, manage or work at the Smiling Hill Farm near Portland, Maine. "You don't want to be the generation that failed," says co-owner Warren Knight, who adds that the operation depends on accumulated knowledge and experience.
