Researchers at Newcastle University in the U.K. found women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes had a 7% risk of delivering a baby with a birth defect, compared with a 2% risk in women without diabetes. Women with diabetes who came from poorer backgrounds or who did not take folic acid during pregnancy faced a greater risk, according to the study in the journal Diabetologia.
