Bats' life history makes them the perfect zoonotic disease reservoir

Recent research showed bats harbor the most zoonotic pathogens per species, including headline-grabbing viruses such as rabies, Nipah, Hendra and Ebola. The geographical overlap of numerous bat species in one area combined with bats' body size, reproduction characteristics, genetic similarity and longevity make them ideal reservoirs for these deadly viruses, according to researchers.
