California club under investigation for volunteer workers

The Rancho Mirage Country Club in California is under investigation regarding its use of volunteers who served as marshals or manned starter booths at the club, and officials with the California Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Labor Standards say it may owe years in back pay. "There are courses throughout the state where the status of the volunteer is preserved, and cases where it’s not preserved,” says attorney Edward Smilow. “It really comes down to, Are they volunteers or not? -- someone who gives something without expectations of remuneration.”
