Fidelity: 401(k) contributions rose in 2011, but balances stayed flat

The average 2011 year-end balance in Fidelity Investments' 401(k) plans was $69,100, down $300 from 2010, according to the company, which is the nation's largest plan administrator. The average contribution was $5,750, up from $5,680 in 2010. Investment performance and fees helped keep average 401(k) balances relatively flat last year, despite the rise in contributions. Another factor was the number of new 401(k) participants with small balances, Fidelity said.
