NRC clears licenses for new Georgia reactors

Southern Co.'s planned expansion of its Plant Vogtle facility in Georgia was cleared by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Thursday, the first new reactors approved for construction in the U.S. in more than 30 years. "Today's licensing action sounds a clarion call to the world that the United States recognizes the importance of expanding nuclear energy as a key component of a low-carbon energy future that is central to job creation, diversity of electricity supply and energy security," said Marvin Fertel, president and CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute.
