Study recommends lower limit on salt intake

The Institute of Medicine, which works with the FDA, says Americans should adjust their salt intake to 1,500 mg a day, down from the current level of 2,400 mg. Currently the average American eats more than 4,000 mg a day. The Institute also reported Americans need to double their intake of potassium and should drink water based on their thirst, rather than the adage of eight glasses a day. "Dietary recommendations for all Americans need to be realistic," said GMA's Stephanie Childs.
