Dermatologic surgeon shares safety checklist for in-office surgery

Careful documentation can improve the safety of surgical procedures, former ASDS president and dermatologic surgeon Roger Ceilley said at the Hawaii Dermatology Seminar. Checklist items include circling the treatment site and having the patient confirm it, checking on allergies and the presence of electronic implants, making a note of blood pressure and pulse, and justifying the use of prophylactic antibiotics. Ceilley also discussed sutureless closures, closing tight wound defects, dressing surgical sites and equipping surgical trays.
