People should research the costs of pet ownership before bringing home a new animal friend and budget accordingly, say veterinarians Peter Maguire of Colorado State University and Joseph Bartges of the University of Tennessee. Although owners can be surprised by the cost of treatments for animals, Dr. Bartges points out that therapies for cancer and other conditions in animals often cost far less than treatments for the same conditions in humans. Dr. Bartges and Cornell University veterinarian Brian Collins also emphasize the importance of regular veterinary care for ensuring optimal health and avoiding procedures that could have been prevented with appropriate care such as vaccinations and parasite control.
