Generics-only drugstore chain attracts Mexican consumers

Farmacias Similares features low-cost generics, some of them self-manufactured, and has shaken up Mexico's health care system by capturing part of a market previously dominated by U.S. and European pharmaceutical firms. The chain has grown to 2,550 stores and 1,900 clinics in Mexico and is opening others in Central America and in Argentina. Though prices are set low enough for low-income Mexicans to afford, some doctors and competitors have argued the drugs dispensed by Farmacias Similares are low-quality and are not as potent as brand-name drugs.
