Analysis: Ethanol blend wall affects RFS compliance

Something has to give in the implementation of the Renewable Fuel Standard for advanced biofuels through 2015, according to Scott Irwin and Darrel Good, economists at the University of Illinois. Otherwise, it could lead to a too-rapid expansion of biodiesel production that would tax existing capacity and overwhelm feedstock markets. To avert this, there would have to be a very large increase in E15 or E85 uptake, or the Environmental Protection Agency would have to be more flexible in setting the total advanced mandate, Irwin and Good state.
