Paper narrowly avoids demise due to postal surcharge

Thanks to a last-minute plea and some fancy folding techniques, the oldest U.S. newspaper will survive. The New Hampshire Gazette had faced a potentially ruinous mailing surcharge due to the fact that U.S. Postal Service machines could not handle the paper the way it was folded. After a brief reprieve and some quick negotiations, the paper is now folded differently, and the surcharge has been avoided.
