Ballmer: With Windows Phone 7, no need for major purchase

Microsoft President Steve Ballmer said Monday that the new Windows Phone 7 presents a user experience "that is really quite different" from any current smartphone and that the company saw no reason to buy a hardware company or change its license fees. The phone, which embeds elements of Microsoft's Xbox gaming console, Zune media player, Office suite and e-mail, starts up with real-time feeds from social-networking sites and other content rather than the usual static icons. Separately, HTC said it would ship its first handset equipped with Windows Phone 7 late this year.
