ACC: Hazard claims against plastics are unwarranted

A journal article's claim that plastics should be declared hazardous for effects on marine life is "neither justified nor helpful," according to the American Chemistry Council. "Plastics used in food contact and medical device applications are evaluated for safety by governments around the world. And the plastics identified by the authors as 'higher priorities' are used in durable applications (pipes, siding, roofing, refrigerators) which are not generally littered or found in the ocean," said Steve Russell, ACC's vice president of plastics.
