Iowa's SANE nurses train to help assault victims

Registered nurses choose to work on the Mid-Iowa Sexual Assault Response Team because they have compassion for sexual assault victims and want to build knowledge and skills in nursing, said Shannon Knudsen, who leads the sexual assault nurse examiners who work in the program. To become a SANE nurse, RNs must have at least one year of nursing experience, complete a 40-hour course and train with an examiner.
