Activists: Better to regulate NYC bathhouses than shut them down

As New York City considers whether to shut down bathhouses and sex clubs or impose stricter rules for them, activists say keeping them open gives them a better chance of educating their patrons about HIV/AIDS prevention. "If you close down these sex clubs, it just drives this activity underground," said Sean Cahill, a managing director of the Gay Men's Health Crisis. "By knowing where these places are, we can go in and engage people and move them in healthier directions."
