White House announces Gen. Allen's retirement

Marine Gen. John Allen, the former top commander in Afghanistan, has informed the White House that he plans to retire rather than become the top commander of NATO. A White House statement cited health issues within Allen's family as a reason for his retirement. Allen's wife is reportedly coping with chronic health problems, including an autoimmune disorder.
