Research: Tenure-track jobs in the sciences are declining

Tenure-track jobs in scientific fields are not the norm anymore, according to research presented recently at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Instead, such jobs should be considered "alt-ac" -- or alternative academic career -- positions, one researcher suggested. "Things weren't really so great before 2008, and since [the start of the economic downturn], they have gotten much worse," said Georgia State University professor Paula Stephan.
