Spending slowdown may improve relations between DOD, industry

The closing of the Pentagon spending spigot may have the effect of improving communication between the Defense Department and industry contractors, some say. Before, "[w]hen we had a program that was bleeding, we cauterized the wound with money, because we had it" and communication between industry and the DOD "broke down," said Brett Lambert, deputy assistant secretary of defense for manufacturing and industrial-base policy. That's beginning to change, he says, and the Pentagon is launching new dialogue with industry as it prepares for a time of austerity.
