Retirement-age workers look to franchises to be their own boss

A number of retirement-age employees are leaving their jobs for a chance to be their own boss, a growing trend in the aftermath of the recession. The Nurse Next Door franchise reported an increase in the average age of new franchisees over the last six to nine months, which is up to 56 from 45. Franchisees including 52-year-old Mark Whitworth, who lost his job and opened a Neighborhood Chem-Dry franchise, enjoy the freedom of self-employment.
