Despite virtually no inflation, U.S. is on course for a deeper downturn

With annual U.S. inflation reported Friday at a low 0.36%, fears are growing that the upcoming austerity advocated in budget negotiations by both political parties will only further undermine the economy. At this stage, however, the automatic cuts that would take effect Friday appear the most likely and most damaging outcome, as Democrats and Republicans remain at loggerheads over Democratic proposals for tax increases.
