The ability to advocate for yourself or for causes that are important to you is critical to achieving your career goals, says Selena Rezvani, author of "Pushback: How Smart Women Ask -- and Stand Up -- for What They Want." Don't be afraid to ask for something just because nobody else has asked before, and don't accept the answer "no" and give up. "Often the timing just wasn't right the first time so a second ask [timed better or under different circumstances] will do the trick," Rezvani says.
