Altera offers FPGA reference designs for smart-grid substations

Altera is offering reference designs for smart-grid substation automation equipment, incorporating its field-programmable gate array chips. The reference design was jointly developed with Flexibilis, a wireless networks firm. "A key trend today in developing a smarter power grid is bidirectional communication and real-time control of the equipment in the grid's transmission and distribution substations," Altera's Jason Chiang said.
