Demand remains high in Ala. for math, science teachers

While a single job posting for an elementary-school teacher might attract hundreds of applicants, vacancies for teaching posts in math, science and foreign language do not draw as much interest, says Ed Nichols, superintendent for Decatur City Schools in Alabama. Debra Baird, dean of the Education Department at Athens State University, said school districts seem more apt to hire graduates with dual degrees, adding that they see this as a cost-effective strategy in an age of shrinking education budgets.
