IP/MPLS communication proves critical to OG&E smart grid program

Oklahoma Gas and Electric has teamed with Alcatel-Lucent to use next-generation communication technology to enhance the utility's ability to leverage wind energy and demand response tools to cut down on its reliance on fossil fuels. OG&E's Positive Energy Smart Grid program -- which was detailed in a recent study -- relied on Alcatel-Lucent's two-layered, IP/MPLS communications network as a foundation for monitoring and control tools that allowed the utility to reduce customer demand by 2% per year and realize $22 million in savings by this year.
