How education would be affected by a government shutdown

Most school districts and states would not immediately be affected by a shutdown of the federal government -- a possibility later this week if lawmakers are unable to reach a compromise on the nation's budget. Most federal education funding is "forward-funded," meaning that most districts have the funding they need through July. However, school districts that include military bases or other federal programs could be affected sooner.
