AANP urges lawmakers to change scope of practice laws

Nine months prior to the full implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners is advocating changes to laws limiting nurse practitioners' scope of practice. "We're about to add about 30 million people to our health insurance system and there needs to be someone available to see them," AANP President Angela Golden said. NPs are uniquely positioned to address the primary care shortage, Golden said. Most NPs already practice in primary care settings, and research has showed they have comparable patient outcomes to physicians, she said.
