Many game developers are leaving major studios to strike out on their own with independent projects for mobile devices and tablets, a Game Developers Conference survey said. More than half of respondents call themselves independent game developers, and about 40% have come from major game-development studios. In addition, distribution companies such as Steam have kept 48% of developers interested in PC and Mac computer platforms, despite the dramatic rise of mobile-gaming platforms.
