Code-breaking exercise is used to teach math

A cross-curricular exercise where students role-played as World War II code-breakers helped students learn about factors, multiples and other math concepts, says Charlotte King, grade 8 math teacher in Oxfordshire, England. In this blog post, King describes how she transforms her classroom into "Hut 8: Station X," where students are charged with deciphering messages using several techniques to help the war effort. "We learned that mathematicians and musicians were good at cracking codes because they are good at finding patterns," one student wrote after the exercise.
