Dietary fiber has digestive and heart benefits, NP says

Adding fiber to the diet helps the digestive system and promotes heart health, says nurse practitioner Jody Gilchrist of the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Soluble fibers increase satiety and reduce cholesterol, while insoluble fiber can help prevent constipation by adding bulk to the digestive system. Gilchrist advises increasing fiber consumption gradually and drinking lots of water.
