Precast building with Inuit carvings to be polar bears' home in N.Y.

Gwen Howard's design for a 1.5-acre enclosure for polar bears at the Buffalo, N.Y., zoo includes a one-story precast concrete building "stained a dark tone and ornamented with Inuit silkstone carvings sandblasted into the exterior." The "Arctic Edge" exhibit's architecture is a reflection of the Buffalo Zoo's exhibit theme, Howard said. "[T]his is a true immersive exhibit, where the patron will walk through a variety of animal habits so they feel they are at the 'arctic edge'."
