Weight-loss surgery in obese diabetes patients cuts mortality risk

Bariatric surgery was associated with a 25% reduction in mortality risk in obese type 2 diabetes patients, a diabetes expert said at the ADA's Advanced Postgraduate Course. Dr. John Bantle, professor of medicine and director of the division of endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Minnesota, recommended laparoscopic gastric bypass, saying some forms of surgery do not show high efficacy and others may pose health risks.
