Organizations debate carotid disease guidelines

SCAI stands by guidelines it and a coalition of other medical groups, including SVS, released in 2011 on the management of extracranial carotid and vertebral artery disease despite guidelines published by SVS later that year. SCAI President Dr. Christopher White, who will publish an official response in SCAI's journal, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, disputes SVS' rationale that additional data justified the new guidelines. "There was no significant information that would trump a randomized controlled trial like CREST," White said.
