Hospital's wellness program shows no short-term cost savings

A St. Louis hospital system's comprehensive wellness program resulted in significant reductions in hospitalization rates for lifestyle diseases including diabetes and hypertension, according to a study in Health Affairs. However, the wellness program also increased patients' medication and outpatient visit costs, suggesting that immediate savings may not be possible for such initiatives.
