Sequestration, RAC audits and more threaten O&P nationally

A number of issues on the national stage could have a profound impact on the O&P industry, writes author Adam Stone. The OIG's recommendation that back orthoses be classified as off-the-shelf items ignores the fittings and adjustments necessary and subjects them to competitive bidding and the possibility of lower reimbursement rates. In addition, O&P facilities have seen an aggressive increase in RAC audits, and the current congressional focus on reducing the deficit is likely to drive more policies that would negatively impact O&P, he writes.
