Vendors are beginning to test the boundaries of so-called network functions virtualization, or NFV, and its applications in the 4G wireless world by exploring its suitability in the packet core. Among the early pioneers of evolved packet core virtualization, Intel recently demonstrated a virtualized packet core for Long-Term Evolution and 3G using OpenStack. Still, some telecom companies, including Orange, are asking whether NFV has a place in the wireline world.
