Crystal found in shipwreck confirmed to be calcite

A small crystal stone discovered in a 16th-century British shipwreck off the island of Alderney has been confirmed to be made of calcite, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A. The confirmation supports an earlier theory that Vikings and other sailors used "sunstones" as a means to navigate waters on cloudy days.
