Freelancing in digital age: The best of times, the worst of times

While it may be tougher for freelance writers to make a living through traditional outlets in the digital age, new opportunities to publish for money have also opened up, writes Mathew Ingram. Writer Nate Thayer recently complained that The Atlantic asked to rework one of his pieces for its magazine, but said that it wouldn't pay him for the work. Thayer's complaint omits any mention of other publishing options as e-books, Byliner singles and a number of publishing options that weren't available in the pre-digital world, Ingram says.
