Military health care will suffer under sequestration, DOD official says

If the Military Health Service is forced to furlough civilian medical employees to meet sequestration budget-cutting goals, health care services at military facilities will suffer, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Dr. Jonathan Woodson wrote on the MHS website. Cuts could affect research, equipment purchases and availability of practitioners, since 41% of the MHS workforce is civilian and subject to sequestration furloughs. A bill in the House would give the Defense Department more leeway in where cuts are made, allowing it to lessen the impact on military health care.
