Some N.D. schools join Spread the Word to End the Word campaign

Schools in Grand Forks, N.D., are working with the Special Olympics and others as part of an international campaign aimed at stamping out use of the word "retard" in any context. Besides other activities, one school hosted a speech by former student Erin Baumann, who has Down syndrome. "Anyone with an intellectual disability deserves to be treated as a human being. It doesn't matter if you have intellectual disability or not, all children are important," Baumann said.
