U.S. cracks down on text-message spam

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed eight lawsuits against companies that have sent a total of more than 180 million often deceptive text messages, noting costs mounting into the millions for unsuspecting consumers. Major retailers also have protested over the spam messages, some of which reference them and make promises that aren't fulfilled.
