AMD abandons silicon-on-insulator tech for 28nm chips

Advanced Micro Devices will not use silicon-on-insulator wafer technology in making chips with 28-nanometer features. Thomas Seifert, AMD's chief financial officer, attributed the decision to technical trade-offs involving the company's silicon foundries and its chip design tools.
