FCC may let VoIP providers issue numbers outside service areas

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski is said to have issued a series of rule-change proposals this week aimed at making it easier for those with VoIP services to get phone numbers from outside their geographic areas. The proposals reportedly would allow VoIP providers to tap into a national pool of numbers. VoIP providers have been lobbying for the change.
