Potential bone marrow donor deferred because of weight

A potential bone marrow donor was deferred because he is overweight. The potential donor said he was willing to do "whatever it takes" to be able to donate and give a 10-year-old girl with leukemia a chance at life. "The primary risk associated with excess weight is related to marrow collection ... Regulating anesthesia is more difficult in patients who exceed weight guidelines, which can cause problems with breathing, blood pressure and heart rate," a spokesperson for the National Marrow Donor Program said.
