MRS offers insight into body's response to heavy drinking

Heavy drinkers, those who consume at least eight alcoholic beverages per week, had increased and faster uptake and metabolism of acetate than light drinkers, those who consumed less than two alcoholic beverages a week, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Researchers used MR spectroscopy to monitor the brain absorption and metabolism of acetate. The results may allow for the development of methods to address alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
