Apple's advantage in app economy results from business model

Apple's business model gives its iOS devices an advantage over rivals Google, Amazon and Microsoft, allowing users to have exclusive Apple applications as well as its competitors' best offerings, Walter S. Mossberg writes. Apple's tablet dominance is especially paying off, according to ABI Research, which says tablets will garner 35% of total app revenue in 2013, giving Apple a 65% share of the combined smartphone/tablet global app economy. "The smartphones paved the way for them, but in the end we believe that it's the tablets that will prove the more transformative device segment of the two," ABI Senior Analyst Aapo Markkanen says.
