IHS prepares for deeper sequestration cuts than anticipated

A miscalculation by the Indian Health Service on the level of sequestration cuts the agency would be subjected to has left Native Americans facing steep reductions in available health care services. IHS now faces a 9% budget reduction but predicted only a 2% budget cut last year and did not move aggressively to implement cost-cutting measures, guard resources and launch advocacy efforts for more protection. Estimates from the National Congress of American Indians predict that hospitals and clinics run by the IHS and tribes will experience as many as 804,000 fewer outpatient visits, as well as 3,000 fewer inpatient admissions.
