Mich. laws offer a chance to avoid inheriting contamination liability

Investors who buy Michigan properties may be exempted from liability for previous contamination by performing a series of environmental assessments to determine whether contaminants are present and if they have been or could be released into buildings, ground or water, Saulius Mikalonis writes. "Due care" obligations, however, still exist for owners and operators, and lawyers' and consultants' advice is needed to meet the requirements of the law and maintain liability protections, Mikalonis writes.
