Opinion: Open APIs may diminish, but private models are flourishing

Despite the closure of Netflix's open API program to new developers, the applications programming interface business "on the whole is growing like crazy," Runscope co-founder John Sheehan writes, especially for private or partner APIs. "Infrastructure providers like Twilio, SendGrid and Stripe have shaken up entrenched, crowded markets by providing better APIs," he writes. And APIs are essential to software-as-a-service, consumer Internet companies and retailers such as Target, which is deriving business intelligence from the use of APIs, Sheehan writes.
